Nasal congestion is a symptom which can mean sinus pressure to some, and for others it can mean poor nasal airflow. Many ENT doctors refer to nasal stuffiness or restricted airflow as nasal obstruction.

Three situations cause most cases of nasal obstruction:

  • Enlarged turbinates
  • Crooked septum
  • Enlarged turbinates and crooked septum

What causes enlarged turbinates?

Turbinates like other part of the body vary in size and shape, and sometimes they are too large for the nose.

What causes a crooked (deviated) septum?

The septum can move and shift over time without injury, and an injury to the nose can incline a patient to develop a deviated septum, even if there is no change to the shape of the nose.
